Physical Therapy Bicycle Fitting
Would you like to avoid a cycling injury while training? If you have pain on the bike or have a history of bike-related injuries, would you like to determine if your bike fit is part of the cause?
Begin your journey of becoming a better cyclist by identifying deficits in your positioning and allowing our PT bike fitters to tailor your bike to your needs.
The fitting service is a 4-step process:
A brief subjective interview will be completed, including an overview of injury history, goals, and concerns.
Motion capture is performed using the Noraxon MR4 2D motion-tracking system to capture the rider’s baseline position.
This system automatically tracks the cyclist’s joint angles in real-time, analyzes these angles, and populates the findings into an easy-to-read report.
Your fitter takes information from the subjective interview, the findings from the motion capture report, and their PT skills and knowledge to develop a blueprint of what adjustments may be needed to meet the goals of the cyclist. The fitter then applies these adjustments incrementally to achieve the best balance between rider goals, physical limitations, and available hardware on the bike.
Motion capture is repeated to capture a final position. Both motion capture reports are provided to the rider at the end of the session for comparison, as well as a list of adjustments made to the bike, and any recommendations the fitter might have for the rider.
While our goal is to maximize your fit with the existing hardware on your bike, your fitter may recommend equipment if it appears this may significantly improve the fit. We recommend your favorite local bike shop for any equipment needs.
Every bike fitting service comes with a free 30-day follow up, with the opportunity to perform another 2D motion capture if any further adjustments are made to the bike.
*The Physical Therapy Bicycle Fitting does not include diagnosis of any specific underlying pathologies that may explain the findings in the reports, but there will be some general discussion depending on the findings. It also does not include instruction in corrective exercises, treatment plans, or any other formal “Physical Therapy” services. For those services, a follow-up with one of our Cyclist Physical Therapists is highly recommended. Our therapists have extensive training in cycling analysis, corrective exercise instruction, cyclist coaching, and treatment of soft tissue & joint mobility restrictions & injuries.
“I’m training for an Ironman and was in desperate need of a bike fitting. I am a Physical Therapist myself and don’t trust just anyone with my care. Ellen made sure that I did not leave without the proper adjustments. I went from biking 40 miles with extreme lateral foot pain, to absolutely zero pain in my first attempt at biking 70 miles after my fitting. ”
